Surgery will not be able to remove a patients scar entirely but it will make it less visible. Facial scarring that let to problems with the eyelids, lips, nose or hair loss can also be helped with reconstructive burn surgery. Scars that are abnormally thick, wide, or discolored might also be improved by a variety of Operative and Non-operative methods.
Burn surgery as two main category
- Acute burn- A small percentage of these injuries are fatal, but all require some degree of medical attention. Most deep second layer burn or third layer burn require reconstruction surgery.
- Reconstructive burn – its a surgery done after the initial burn wounds have healed. The goal of this surgery is to improve both the function and cosmetic appearance of the scar. This type of care is mostly provided by the plastic surgeon.
Non surgical therapy involves scar massage, application of pressure garments, or other topical therapies.
Surgical option mainly consist of surgical removal of tight scar tissue and that open space is closed by a plastic surgeon. There are multiple ways to close this wounds depending on the patients goal. Skin grafts, skin rearrangement (sometimes called Z-plasty), and more complex skin donor flaps could be used. Tissue expansion can also be used as an alternative to skin grafting.
